The Crime Prevention Unit is very active with a variety of responsibilities. We provide a number of FREE presentations and services to the public. These presentations are done in individual homes or businesses throughout the city.
We work with our School Resource Officers to conduct training in our schools to ensure the students have a safe environment in which to learn.
By utilizing the experience and training of our officers we can teach almost any topic that our citizens need.
Some of the topics we cover are:
- Personal Safety
- Armed Robbery Prevention
- Neighborhood Watch Programs (PDF)
- Neighborhood Watch Areas
- Business Theft Prevention
- Senior Safety
- Identity Theft
- Computer Crimes
- School Safety
- Residential/Security Surveys
For more information on these or any topic, call us at 816-236-1473.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
CITIZEN RIDE ALONG PROGRAM
The St. Joseph Police Department has a ride along program for which it is easy to apply. Your ride-along will consist of riding with a patrol officer as he/she works a normal shift: answering calls, stopping vehicles, and everything else that makes up a typical tour-of-duty. Riding along with an officer can be an eye-opening experience. Your application will be reviewed and a criminal history run. If you are approved (you must be over 18 and not have a criminal record or warrants), they will schedule a time and date for you to ride-along.
